My name is Heidi. I’ve lived in Seattle for 30 years, but oddly I still consider myself from Denver.
Apart from creating things, what do you do?
Other than creating things from reclaimed cashmere, I paint with ink, garden, do crossword puzzles, read, attempt to keep the house clean, and lead a Girl Scout Troop – oh, and sit in front of a computer.
What first made you want to become an artist?
After a fieldtrip to the zoo when I was in preschool, my class was asked to draw our favorite animal at the zoo. I drew an anteater. My teacher liked it so much she asked me to draw her one too. Then, my mom gave me her old sewing machine when I was 5. I sewed doll clothes while she sewed my school clothes. I guess there was just so much encouragement from an early age, that I just kept doing it!
Please describe your creative process how, when, materials, etc.
My creative process...involves waking up at 1am, a big bowl of about 6 cereals mixed together, and sitting around procrastinating. Then the urge hits me to go make what has been milling around in my head for the last 3 hours, because clearly I am not going back to bed. I am definitely more creative after 9pm – whether sewing or painting – and always have been.
What handmade possession do you most cherish?
Other than my daughter, I have a burlap & yarn piece of art that I made in elementary school that says “Free to be you and me”
